Culinary catastrophes

An experiment: I'm going to photograph food. Not just any food, but food out of supermarket packs - frozen food, or food to go, or any kind of food with an utterly fanciful "serving suggestion" on the front.

You know the ones. The serving suggestion looks incredible, but the end result looks like a bucket of slop, even when you try to pretty it up with a sprig of oregano grown in your very own garden.

Let's start with McCain's frozen lasagne.

Four slices of pasta, bolognese sauce and bechamel sauce with romano cheese on top.

Look away now if you don't want to hurt your eyes...

The bechamel sauce looked sprayed on it was so thin and spotty, and the food itself was a bit tricky to get out of the tray, but it did come out and it held together in one slab. So much for the structural engineering, now comes the taste test.

Mmm, not awful, but you'd have to be really hungry, or doing some attention-seeking stunt for a blog, to eat the whole thing. This is food for sad, lonely bastards and for that it does its job.

Told me something
Blogger Living in Canberra told me...

At least the lasagne vaguely resembles lasagne and is just edible. Some of the curries look like baby vomit.

The one that amuses me is spaghetti bolognese. I mean, you could cook your own from scratch in about the same time as heating up a package in the microwave.

Mind you, you can also get frozen mashed potato.

I love instant mashed potato - that stuff where you just add boiled water. I didn't realise you could get it frozen as well! Must go hunting next time I'm at the megamart.

You're right with the curries, although starting off this experiment with a curry will be like shooting fish in a barrel. Gotta save the curry for when I run out of ideas (ie, next week).
